Gilbert vs. Norwalk
August 1, 2020
Norwalk won its first state tournament in more than 10 years, taking down Gilbert 8-6 on Saturday for the Class 3A title.
Gilbert made things interesting in the final inning when the Tigers scored five runs, but Norwalk hung on for its first championship since 2009.
The Warriors jumped out to a 4-1 lead after a four-hit first inning. Norwalk started things off with a single from Evan Borst. Nate Lane walked and a groundout advanced the pair into scoring position. Borst would score when Gilbert dropped a fly ball and a single from Cael Eck plated Lane. Singles by Ryan Wood and Tanner Foltz brought in the final two runs of the inning.
Gilbert’s late rally came after Norwalk pitcher Tucker Christensen left the mound. Christensen struck out 12 batters and only gave up five hits, but after he pitched six innings — and neared his pitch count — the Warriors went with Drew Leek, who allowed five runs. Norwalk’s Jake Fees notched the save, coming in for Leek and finishing the job.
Norwalk’s top hitter was Evan Borst, who went 3-for-4. Cael Eck and Tanner Foltz each recorded two hits as well.
Gilbert’s Easton Johnson followed a similar suit to Borst, going 3-for-4. The rest of the Tigers combined for six hits.
