Van Meter vs. Des Moines Christian

August 1, 2020

For the first time in school history, the Bulldogs are back-to-back state champions.

Van Meter defeated Des Moines Christian 6-0 in the 2A championship Saturday, claiming the school’s second title in as many years.

The Bulldogs kept the Lions quiet for the entire game. Van Meter arm Anthony Potthoff pitched a shutout Saturday, tossing a full seven scoreless innings. Potthoff struck out eight batters and walked just two. He allowed four hits.

Van Meter’s offense struck first in the bottom of the opening inning. Potthoff flied out to center field, which would score Zach Pleggenkuhle.

The Bulldogs added two more runs in the fourth. Bryce Cole plated Kolby Booge on an RBI single and Cody Coffman scored on a double from Pleggenkuhle.

Van Meter added another two runs in the sixth inning when Potthoff brought in a pair with a single down the left side.

Des Moines Christian struggled to counter offensively in the school’s second-ever state tournament appearance. The Bulldogs went 4-for-27 at the plate, and six errors defensively (triple from the previous two tournament games combined), didn’t help either.

This was Van Meter’s third title in school history. The Bulldogs won in 2019 and 2003.

Both teams are members of the West Central Conference. Van Meter won the regular-season meeting 1-0.
