Dallas Center-Grimes vs. Gilbert
July 31, 2020
Gilbert punched its ticket to the Class 3A state title game with a 14-7 win over Dallas Center-Grimes on Friday thanks to an offensive explosion in the fifth inning.
The Tigers boomed for nine runs in the fifth — five more runs than they scored in their entire quarterfinal win against ADM.
The entire batting order saw time at the plate before the inning’s first out.
Gilbert’s fifth-inning success came right after Dallas Center-Grimes took a 4-1 lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Nick Chasey started things off for the Tigers with a single. Easton Johnson, Owen Blumhagen, Spencer Clatt, Joe Drzycimiski, Trey Hansen and Tucker Hanson also notched hits in the inning. Gilbert totaled six hits in the nine-run inning, with Dallas Center-Grimes committing two errors.
The Tigers would add four more runs in the sixth inning.
Gilbert designated hitter Nick Chasey and third baseman Easton Johnson each went 3-for-4 at the plate. Chasey finished with four RBIs and Johnson had two.
The third-seeded Tigers advanced at 23-3. The second-seeded Mustangs ended at 18-4.
The start of the game was delayed 20 minutes as a Gilbert player accidentally locked himself inside the home dugout bathroom.
Iowa Cubs stadium operations and grounds crew staffers came to the rescue with a crowbar and sledgehammer.
The player survived, and started the game for the Tigers.
