North Linn vs. Des Moines Christian

July 30, 2020

Sixth-seeded Des Moines Christian upset second-seeded North Linn 4-2 in eight innings Thursday, advancing to the 2A state championship game.

The Lions offense caught fire in the top of the eighth. Adam Witty delivered the go-ahead run in the top of the inning. With runners on first and second, he connected on an RBI double, which landed just inside the left-field line. Teammate Trey Castile popped out to right field soon after, scoring Kole Bradley for the Lions’ fourth run of the game.

Meanwhile, Lions pitcher Trey Castile couldn’t miss early on. The senior had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning. Castile tossed nine strikeouts and gave up just two hits in his complete game.

In the clutch, Castile delivered. North Linn scored in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game on a bunt from Cael Bridgewater. But facing runners on second and third with just one out, Castile retired the next two batters with a pair of strikeouts.

Castile went on to strike out the final two Lynx batters in the eighth to win the game.

The two teams met in the semifinals last year, with North Linn winning 3-0.

Des Moines Christian (17-6) will face Van Meter in the 2A championship. The Bulldogs took down West Lyon 3-1 earlier Thursday in the semifinals.

Van Meter won the regular-season meeting between the two teams, 1-0.

North Linn ended at 19-3.
