Dubuque Hempstead vs. Iowa City High
July 29, 2020
Dubuque Hempstead defeated Iowa City High 7-6 in walk-off fashion in a Class 4A quarterfinal Wednesday at Principal Park.
In the bottom of the seventh with two outs and runners on first and second, Andrue Henry sent a double to left field. The outfielder misplaced the ball and it hit the grass, giving runners Zach Sabers and Michael Garrett time to cross home for the win.
Just moments before, it seemed as though City High had all the momentum. The Little Hawks stormed back into the game after trailing by four runs.
City High scored one fifth, two in the sixth and two in the seventh, including the go-ahead run. With the bases loaded, Hempstead pitcher Logan Runde walked Cade Obermueller, scoring Gable Mitchell. It was the Little Hawks’ first lead since 1-0 heading into the bottom of the first.
But Hempstead countered in the bottom of the inning, scoring its first two runs since the second inning.
Henry, who plated the game-winning run, pitched the first four innings. While he allowed City High’s first run, he didn’t give up a hit and stuck out four batters. Offensively, teammates Runde, Devin Eudaley and Max Pins each notched multi-hit performances.
Egan Smith led the Little Hawks offense with a 2-for-3 performance. In total, six different City High players accounted for the team’s seven hits.
The third-seeded Mustangs advanced at 15-1. The sixth-seeded Little Hawks ended at 11-9.
