Cedar Rapids Xavier vs. Central DeWitt
August 3, 2019
The top-seeded Cedar Rapids Xavier Saints defeated the third-seeded Central DeWitt Sabers 8-1 to win the Class 3A state championship Saturday at Principal Park. The Saints added to the state title they won in 2006.
The Saints’ offense got off to a fast start, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Sabers’ second baseman made a throwing error that allowed the first run to score, and two more RBI singles came in to make it a 3-0 Xavier advantage after the first inning.
Central DeWitt responded in the third with a run off the bat of Garrett Finley, the team’s RBI leader, but Xavier’s offense continued to hit.
In the third inning, Nate Skala drove in a run on a single. In the fourth inning, it was an RBI double from Quinn Shulte and an RBI triple from Garrett Ries that gave the Saints three more runs. They finished with 11 hits and eight runs.
Once Xavier had the lead, senior Bryson Bastian took over. He had a complete game with 11 strikeouts for the win, his ninth of the year.
The Xavier Saints finished the season with a record of 41-2.
The Central DeWitt Sabers’ quest for their first state title in school history fell short, as they finish the season 38-4.
