North Linn vs. Van Meter
August 3, 2019
Anthony Potthoff and the second-seeded Van Meter Bulldogs shut out the top-seeded North Lynn Lynx 6-0 to win the Class 2A state championship Saturday at Principal Park. It’s the second state title for the Bulldogs, who also won the 1A title in 2003.
North Linn averaged 9.6 runs coming into the game, and hadn’t been blanked all season.
Van Meter started with two runs in the first, both scoring on an error by the Lynx third baseman. Those two runs kept the Bulldogs in front 2-0 through three.
In the fourth, the Bulldogs struck again with three runs, all coming with two outs. Jack Petit got a two-run, two-out single before Zach Pleggenkuhle, Thursday’s winning pitcher, drove in the third run of the inning.
Those five runs were plenty for Potthoff, who worked around early trouble to strand six runners on base in the first four innings. He settled down to give up just two hits in the final three innings, allowing a total of seven hits in the shutout.
The Van Meter Bulldogs finish the season with a record of 34-3.
The North Lynn Lynx fall short in their quest for the first state title in school history, and finish the season at 40-6.
