Davenport Assumption vs. Central DeWitt

August 2, 2019

Central DeWitt grabbed an early lead and went on to upset two-time defending state champion Assumption 4-1 in a Class 3A semifinal Friday afternoon at Principal Park. The Sabers — making only their third state tournament appearance — earned a shot at a state title by defeating the Knights, the team with the most state tournament victories and most state championships in history.

Third-seeded Central DeWitt (38-3) will meet top-seeded Xavier (40-2) for the 3A title on Saturday.

Central DeWitt pitcher Alex McAleer allowed just two hits and struck out 11 in a complete game on 112 pitches. The junior walked just two.

The Sabers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Devin Hurdle led off with a walk and stole second, and scored on a one-out single by Garrett Finley. After the second strikeout of the inning, Jake Swanson ripped an RBI double.

Central DeWitt made it 3-0 with a run in the second. Boomer Johnson got a one-out walk, took second on a ground out and scored on a double by Hurdle.

With one out in the bottom of the second, Jayson Willers crushed a solo shot down the left-field line — the 56th state tournament home run at Principal Park — to pull Assumption within 3-1.

Central DeWitt added a run in the top of the seventh on a lead-off triple by Nolan Haack and an RBI single by Lucas Bixby.

Second-ranked and second-seeded Assumption (32-5) was making its 16th appearance in the summer state tournament, with an all-time best 11 championships. The Knights have won an all-time best 38 state tournament games.
