Iowa City West vs. Pleasant Valley
July 31, 2019
The second-seeded Iowa City West Trojans defeated the seventh-seeded Pleasant Valley Spartans 6-3 in a Class 4A quarterfinal Wednesday night and Thursday morning at Principal Park. The game finished at 12:34 a.m. — tying the second-latest finish in state tournament history.
It was a surprisingly high-scoring game considering that both pitchers entered the game with ERAs under two. The Spartans struck first when Eric Clifton gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead off of a sacrifice ground out.
The Trojans would respond by scoring in five of the six innings when they were up to bat. Their offense was led by Jason Strunk, who had three RBIs on the night.
West starter Marcus Morgan fanned 11 in 5.2 innings and is 9-0 this season.
Iowa City West will advance and face Urbandale in the quarterfinals in hopes that they will be one step closer to capturing their first state title. Pleasant Valley ends the season with an overall record of 25-12.
