Western Dubuque vs. Urbandale

July 31, 2019

The sixth-seeded Urbandale J-Hawks upset the third-seeded Western Dubuque Bobcats 3-0 in a rain-delayed Class 4A quarterfinal Wednesday night at Principal Park. After a scoreless first inning, the two teams endured an almost two-hour rain delay before resuming play.

In a game where hits were hard to come by — both teams combined for only six hits — the J-Hawks pounced on the Bobcats after the long rain delay. In the top of the second inning, Urbandale piled on three straight RBIs off Bobcats pitcher Sam Goodman, who came into the game with just a 0.53 ERA. RBIs came from Lucas Strain, Alex Augustine and Joshua Neyens.

Urbandale's pitching was powered by the tag team known as the Langenberg brothers. After narrowly escaping the first inning — when the bases were left loaded — Ty Langenberg was replaced by his brother, Tucker. Tucker was stellar in his 5.2 innings of work where he struck out three and only gave up one hit.

In the bottom of the seventh, when Tucker was facing the game tying run at the plate who happened to be Bobcats star Calvin Harris, brother Ty came back into the game to record the final out.

Urbandale (29-14) will continue its quest for their second straight 4A state title and will face the winner of the Iowa City West and Pleasant Valley game. Western Dubuque will finish its season with the record of 32-10.
