Johnston vs. Ankeny
July 31, 2019
The top-seeded Johnston Dragons shutout the eighth-seeded Ankeny Hawks 6-0 in a Class 4A quarterfinal Wednesday at Principal Park.
After two scoreless innings opened up the game, the Dragons broke things open on a sacrifice fly from Jacob Swansen before Jake Thilges hit a double over center fielder Cael Boyd to score two more runs.
After a run off the bat of Andrew Nord, the Dragons led 4-0 in the fourth. That was more than enough for starter Jacob Tobey, who fired five innings of two-hit ball, striking out seven in the process.
The Dragons tacked on two more runs in the sixth on a triple from Nord and a base hit from Cade Moss.
Nord went 3-for-3 with two RBIs to lead Johnston at the plate.
The Dragons (35-5) advance to the Class 4A semifinals, where they will play Dowling Catholic.
Last year, Johnston was the top seed — and lost to Cedar Rapids Washington in the first round.
Ankeny ends its season at 21-18.
