Dowling Catholic vs. Southeast Polk

The fourth-seeded Dowling Catholic Maroons, backed by good offense and pitching, defeated the fifth-seeded Southeast Polk Rams 7-0 in a Class 4A quarterfinal Wednesday at Principal Park.
In a game between two teams with two good starters, the Maroons’ Carter Baumler outperformed the Rams’ Evan Martin.
Martin gave up four runs in the first two innings before settling down for a scoreless third and fourth, finishing with four runs allowed on seven hits in four innings.
In the second, after Martin retired Sam Young on strikes, the next five hitters reached, with three of them scoring. Hunter Simpson, Collin Cook and Adam Brauch hit three consecutive singles to drive in the three runs. The Maroons led 4-0 after two innings.
Baumler took care of the rest, firing six shutout innings with just four hits allowed and six strikeouts. He improves to 4-1 on the season.
Dowling Catholic (31-11) moves on to the 4A semifinals to play the winner of Johnston and Ankeny.
Southeast Polk finishes its season at 30-14.
