Central DeWitt vs. Centerville

July 30, 2019

The three-seed Central DeWitt Sabers defeated the six-seed Centerville Big Reds 11-1 in a run-rule shortened five innings on Monday evening in a Class 3A quarterfinal at Principal Park.

It appeared that Central DeWitt was clicking on all cylinders, producing 11 runs and their pitcher, Lucas Bixby, only allowing three hits and striking out six.

The Sabers took an early 1-0 lead after Devin Hurdle scored off of an Alex McAleer single in the bottom of the first.

The following inning produced the same results for Central DeWitt when they added another run off of a RBI single from Henry Bloom.

The game really opened up in the fourth and fifth innings when the Sabers scored nine runs. It was a balanced attack that had six Sabers produce RBIs — the most memorable being when Garrett Finley was a couple feet away from hitting a home run, hitting near the top of the left field wall.

Central DeWitt (37-3) will continue its journey and advance to the semifinals where it will face off against the winner of the Assumption-Boone game. Centerville will end its young team’s season — all players are returning except for one senior — and conclude its season with the record of 24-5.
