Marion vs. Bishop Heelan
July 30, 2019
The fourth-seeded Marion Indians defeated the fifth-seeded Bishop Heelan Crusaders 4-0 in the Class 3A quarterfinals Tuesday at the state tournament at Principal Park.
Marion senior lefty pitcher Rick Atkins was phenomenal in his seven innings of work. Atkins struck out 16 and only let four Crusaders reach base. At one point, he struck out 13 of the 14 batters he faced.
The Marion offense gave Atkins an early lead to work with when an RBI single from Trevor Paulsen and an RBI triple from Owen Puk gave the Indians a 2-0 lead by the end of the first inning.
In the bottom of the third, Nick Cole extended the Marion lead to three by blasting an RBI double into the gap.
The final run for Marion came in the bottom of the fifth when a wild pitch from Crusaders pitcher Brant Hogue allowed Trevor Paulsen steal home from third.
The Indians will continue their pursuit of their first state title and advance to the semifinals and face off against top-seed Xavier. Bishop Heelan will finish its season with the overall record of 29-11.
