Cedar Rapids Kennedy vs. Des Moines Lincoln

July 26, 2006

Cedar Rapids Kennedy came from behind to knock off top-seeded Des Moines Lincoln 7-6 in Class 4A on Wednesday afternoon. The eighth-seeded Cougars, down to their last strike twice, scored four runs in the bottom of seventh inning, the last three on two-out hits. The winning run scored on a two-out, two-strike misplayed pop fly by Teddy Shonka.

Lincoln jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on RBI singles by Sean O’Conner and Curtis Quijano. Kennedy got to within 3-2 in the second when Kyle Hughes and Bryan Geels drew bases-loaded walks.

Two runs in the top of the third for Lincoln made it 5-2 and they tacked on another run in the fourth to make it 6-2. Kennedy answered with one run in the bottom of the fourth to get back within three. Adam Rice doubled and scored on Eric Schultz’s RBI single.

Kennedy put the first five runners on base in the seventh to start the rally. Rice’s two-run single tied the game at six and Shonka’s fly ball to right dropped in for a hit, scoring Kaleb Hahn with the game winner.

Shonka (5-4) came on in relief to get the win for Kennedy. Drew Young (0-1) took the loss for Lincoln.
