Central Lee vs. Des Moines Christian

July 29, 2019

The fifth-seed Des Moines Christian Lions defeated the fourth-seed Central Lee Hawks 9-7 in the Class 2A quarterfinal Monday at Principal Park.

With both teams’ starting pitchers coming in with ERAs under one, the high-scoring affair came as surprise. Central Lee started the game off with one run in each of the first two innings.

Whenever it seemed like the Hawks secured a lead, the Lions would roar back the following inning to either tie or take the lead. RBIs from Brett Shelton, Grant Christy, Frankie Accurso, and Andrew Fox helped the Lions enter the sixth inning with the game tied up at six apiece.

DMC wouldn’t let go of the lead after Fox leaded off with a triple and would score off of a ground out by Adam Witty in the sixth inning.

The Lions will continue their pursuit for a state title and advance to the next round where they will face off against the top-seeded North Linn Lynx. Central Lee will finish their season with the overall record of 29-3.
