North Linn vs. West Branch

July 29, 2019

The top-seeded North Linn Lynx scored six runs in the first inning and went on to defeat the eighth-seeded West Branch Bears 8-1 in a Class 2A quarterfinal Monday at Principal Park.

The Lynx opened the game with six quick runs with RBI hits from Jake Hilmer and Marcus Hromidko. West Branch pitcher Matt Paulsen struggled with his command walking three batters with the bases loaded — and four overall.

Striking out seven and only giving up one hit, Hilmer stumped the opposing batters through his four innings of work. He would also do damage with his base running when he hit a single in the bottom of the fourth and then stole second, third and home.

Top-ranked North Linn (39-5) is one step closer to its first state championship and will advance to the quarterfinals to face off against the winner of the Des Moines Christian and Central Lee game.

West Branch ends its season at 20-8.
