July 29, 2016

The Iowa City West Trojans took a 6-5 victory over the Des Moines Roosevelt Roughriders thanks to a three-run walk-off homer by Jason Strunk Friday night at Principal Park. Strunk finished the night 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI.

Iowa City West grabbed the first lead in the bottom of the second when Nate Disterhoft pushed Spencer Wiskus across the plate on a RBI-single to right-center field. Strunk tabbed a single of his own and then stole home while Disterhoft was caught in a rundown, putting the Trojans up, 2-0.

Zach Lin opened the third inning with a single to right field for Roosevelt. John Swanda drilled a RBI-triple to right-center field to cut the West lead in half. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Stephen Loew tied the game at two. Lin led the Roosevelt offense going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI.

John Swanda took the mound in the third inning and proceeded to give up three straight singles to the Trojans. The righty battled back and got out of the jam, retiring the final two batters of the inning. He allowed three earned run and struck out eight in five innings of work, taking the loss for Roosevelt.

Both sides put up zeros through the next two innings until a RBI-double to deep left-center field by Lin broke the tie in the sixth, giving Roosevelt the 3-2 edge. Jake Smith extended the Roughriders’ lead with a two-run double down the right field line.

The Trojans fought back in the bottom of the frame as Dane Randall drove a double to the warning track in right field to score Disterhoft and make the score 5-3.

Down to its last out, Iowa City had two runners on as Strunk stepped up to the plate. After taking a strike looking, Strunk blasted the next pitch over the left field wall for a three-run walk-off home run.

Iowa City West (35-6) advances to the finals and will face Cedar Rapids Prairie at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at Principal Park.

Roosevelt finishes its season at 33-11.
