Wahlert Catholic vs. Solon

July 26, 2016

The eighth ranked Solon Spartans defeats the top seeded Wahlert Catholic, Dubuque Golden Eagles, 12-2 Tuesday afternoon at Principal Park. It was only the third time in the park's history that an eight seed defeated the top seed in quarterfinal play.

Our second Class 2A quarterfinal game combined for 16 hits, seven errors and 17 people left on base.

The Spartans got their bats going from the start when Patrick Maston singled and Tyler Linderbaum followed him with a double to put runners at second and third. Dillon Drake brought both of them in with a single of his own up the middle to jump Solon out with the early 2-0 lead.

Drake was given the ball and tossed a complete game for the eight seed. He allowed two runs, both unearned, from two hits and four walks, while striking out two. He moved his season record to 4-6 with the quarterfinal win.

Solon added to their lead in the top of the third with two runs from to hits and a catcher's interference called on Wahlert.

The Golden Eagles put their only runs across the board in the bottom half of the fourth. It all started with Alex Timp leading off with a walk and Austin Moore reaching on a catcher's interference call by Solon's catcher. Jimmy McDermott brought in both runners on a single to left field.

Unfortunately that wasn't going to be enough as Solon put four across in each of the next innings to extend their lead to ten and end the tournament short for Wahlert.

Solon advances to the Class 2A semifinals where they will play Friday afternoon.
