Newman Catholic vs. Gehlen Catholic

LeMars Gehlen Catholic started off the state tournament with a bang, upsetting top-seeded and top-ranked Mason City Newman Catholic 3-2 Saturday morning at Principal Park.

Gehlen Catholic scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to upend Newman. BJ Sitzmann smacked an RBI double in the second inning to put Gehlen ahead 1-0. Eric Rohe made it 2-0 in the third with an RBI single.

Newman Catholic cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third on Chris Bohl’s RBI single. Gehlen capitalized on a passed ball in the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead. Newman cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth on a long drive to left, but the tying run was thrown out at the plate on a relay throw from Gehlen shortstop Mitch Kurth.

Alex Loutsch went the distance on the mound for Gehlen Catholic giving up just two runs on three hits and striking out seven. John Bothwell pitched seven strong innings for Newman in a losing cause. He gave up three runs on five hits while striking out eight.

Gehlen (18-14) started the postseason tournament with a losing record. The Jays move on the semifinals on Thursday at noon against Sentral. Newman ends with a record of 34-6, losing to a 1A team for the first time this season.
