Pleasantville vs. West Sioux

Josh Luna’s late heroics for Pleasantville pushed the Trojans past the West Sioux Falcons 5-4 in nine innings in a Class 1A quarterfinal game Saturday night at Principal Park.

Pleasantville got on the scoreboard first when first baseman Jesse Nichols hit an RBI single to left field to make the score 1-0.

With runners at first and third, West Sioux starter Porter Hummel threw a wild pitch, which allowed a runner to score for Pleasantville to increase its lead to 2-0.

Hummel helped his cause when he hit a sacrifice fly to drive in a run and get on the scoreboard in the top of the third for the Falcons.

West Sioux center fielder Kezden Blankenship hit a grounder to the hole at second base to drive in a run and tie it up for the Falcons in the top of the fourth.

Pleasantville broke the gridlock when Luna hit an RBI single to shortstop to make the score 3-2.

West Sioux didn’t go away quietly. Tucker Vander Feen hit a single to center field, but after a throwing error, Blankenship was able to score and tie the game back up for the Falcons in the top of the seventh inning. Hummel hit an RBI single to center to drive in the go-ahead run.

Luna hit a shot off the wall in left-center to drive in a run and tie the game at 4-4, but got thrown out at third.

In the ninth inning, Luna made up for his previous base-running woe by hitting a sacrifice fly to bring the runner over to third. A throwing error by West Sioux would allow the runner to score to for the game-winning run.

Pleasantville’s Zeb Adreon started on the mound for the Trojans. He allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits over 6.1 innings. He struck out 11 and walked five. Luna came in for Pleasantville and earned the win. He spun 2.2 scoreless innings and struck out one.

Hummel suffered the loss for the Falcons. He allowed seven hits, five runs, three earned and four walks with nine strikeouts.

Adreon led Pleasantville offensively. He had three hits and two runs scored.

Four Falcons had one-hit nights. Blankenship had two runs scored to pace West Sioux offensively.

Third-seeded Pleasantville (34-3) will face seventh-seeded North Linn (35-10) on Thursday, July 30 at 1:30 p.m., in the semifinals.

Ninth-ranked and sixth-seeded West Sioux ends at 25-5.
