North Polk vs. Maple Valley / Anthon-Oto

July 28, 2014

Cole Jackson fired a no-hitter and struck out 15 in the top-ranked North Polk Comets’ 7-1 win over the Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto Rams in the Class 2A state quarterfinals Monday afternoon at Principal Park.

Jackson didn’t walk a batter in the win. Shane Dansco advanced to third via two errors to lead off the game for the Rams, but was stranded when Jackson struck out Korey Kuhlmann and Shawn Flanigan to get out of the inning.

Jackson worked five 1-2-3 innings in the game.

Grant Lang led off the second inning with a double for the Comets, leading to the game’s first run. Comets added two runs in the fourth inning when Reed Smith led off with a triple, and was driven in by Russell Greene. Greene then moved to second when Jackson walked, stole third and scored on a passed ball.

The Comets scored three runs in the fifth inning on three hits, highlighted by a two-run single to right field by Lang. The Comets scored their seventh and final run of the game in the sixth inning when Blake Brauer singled to right, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, moved to third on a ground out and scored on an RBI single by Matt Cox.

The Rams’ only run came in the fourth inning when Derrik Kerns and Logan Buth reached base on errors by the Comets’ middle infielders. Kerns advanced to third on the second error, and scored on a wild pitch.

The eighth-seeded Rams finish the season with a record of 19-11.

The top-seeded Comets (30-5) advance to the semifinals Thursday night. North Polk has finished second at state in each of the past two years.
