Walnut vs. Kee

Kee High junior shortstop Gabe Shultz hit a lead off single to kick off the Iowa High School State Baseball Tournament at Principal Park Saturday afternoon. The top ranked Hawks pounded out 18 hits en route to a 14-5 win over the Walnut Warriors in the Class 1A quarterfinals.

Freshman second baseman Blake Schoh laid down a bunt to send Shultz to third which allowed him to score the first run of the game in the next at-bat on a fielder’s choice. Schoh later crossed home on an error. With two outs and senior first baseman Dan Mohn at second, sophomore centerfielder Clayton Welsh singled to left center field to plate Mohn and give the Hawks a 3-0 lead.

With two outs, Walnut brought the score to 3-1 in the bottom of the inning as junior shortstop Danny Petersen scored on a Kee High error. Hawk senior pitcher Jordan Duffy ended the inning with his 100th strike out of the season.

With runners on second and third, Warrior junior third baseman Josh Olson slugged a double to center field to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the second inning.

Mohn singled home junior outfielder Nick Mooney in the top of the third inning and in the top of the fourth, Schultz doubled down the left field line to score sophomore outfielder Bart Fruechte. In the next at bat, Schoh doubled off the left field wall for and RBI, putting Kee High up 6-3.

Welsh hit his second double of the day off the right field wall in the top of the fifth inning before a single by sophomore catcher Dan Reburn allowed him to score. Reburn crossed home on a single by Halverson as the Hawks extended their lead to 8-3.

Mohn collected another RBI in the top of the sixth inning on a single and Welsh hit a sacrifice fly before sophomore pinch hitter Chad Welsh hit a two-RBI single to bring the score to 12-3.
