Urbandale’s quest for its third straight state title continued Wednesday, as the J-Hawks advanced o the 4A semifinals with a 2-0 win over Waukee.
The four-seed J-Hawks (18-9) utilized a strong pitching outing from Ty Langenberg and a 2-for-3 outing from catcher Gehrig Christensen to advance past the Warriors (14-13).
Langenberg tossed a shutout in his 6.1 innings and struck out six batters. He allowed just six hits and moved to 7-0 on the year.
But Waukee had plenty of chances to put runs on the board, despite Langenberg’s stout effort.
Waukee had chances to put runs on the board for most of the game but struggled. The Warriors went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and 1-for-16 with runners on base. Colin Evers led the Waukee with two hits. Teammates Jacob Barton, Jackson Wentworth, and Cooper Crouse also recorded hits.
Meanwhile, Urbandale didn’t manage a hit until the third inning, and that’s when the J-Hawks strung together their only runs of the game.
Gehrig Christensen singled to left field and plated Rece Heinen, and a fly out would score the final run of the inning.
Urbandale now faces the winner of one-seed Johnston and eight-seed Cedar Falls on Friday.
