The top seed in 4A isn’t going anywhere.
Johnston took down Cedar Falls 11-7 on Wednesday, advancing to the 4A semifinals.
The Dragons had themselves a day at the plate, scoring in every inning. Ben Wilmes led the way with a perfect 3-for-3 outing, and teammate Jacob Wolver went 2-for-3. Wilmes, Parker Shupe, and Gabe Swansen each had two RBIs.
Cedar Falls countered with strong hitting from Connor Woods, who finished 3-for-4 and totaled three RBIs. Tigers Brody Bartlett and Caleb Raisty each finished with two hits.
Wednesday marked Cedar Falls’ first trip to the state tournament since 1989 (and second in school history), but the Tigers proved they belonged.
After Johnston jumped out to a 6-0 lead, Cedar Falls made things interesting in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Woods doubled to left field. Raisty, Zach Neese, and Bartlett all scored on the play, cutting Johnston’s deficit in half with one swing.
The Tigers added three more runs the following inning, but Johnston answered with three of its own. The Dragons added another run on a flyout from Wilmes in the sixth for good measure.
Johnston will face Urbandale in the 4A semifinals on Friday — a rematch of last year’s championship game, won by Urbandale.
