Johnston clinched its fifth title in program history with an 11-8 win over Ankeny in the 4A state championship game Saturday night at Principal Park.

The Dragons rallied from a 7-3 deficit, outscoring the Hawks 8-1 over the game’s final three innings.

After a three-run fifth inning, Johnston’s offense caught fire in the sixth. The Dragons scored five runs in the inning, starting with an RBI single from Gabe Swansen. Jacob Wolver plated Swansen moments later with a single of his own and Jack Hutchison drove in another run with a perfect bunt. Spencer Campadilli was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing in another run.

Johnston added two more runs, and Ankeny would never counter.

The Dragons put up eight hits, two of which came from Wolver and Ben Wilmes. Swansen, Hutchison, Campadilli, and Parker Shupe, accounted for the rest. Campadilli finished with three RBIs and Wolver added a pair.

Pitching for both teams fizzled out halfway through, but Johnston turned to Wolver, who delivered. In his three innings, Wolver tossed two strikeouts and allowed just two hits. Ankeny managed just one run with Wolver on the mound.

Ankeny’s top hitter was Kade Somers, who went 2-for-4 from the plate. Teammate Brody Brecht added three RBIs to lead the way.

Johnston previously won the state tournament in 2017, 2013, 2008, and 1977.
