In the clash of the Tigers, Gilbert came out on top 4-0 over ADM on Tuesday night, earning the final spot in the 3A semifinals.
Pitcher Easton Johnson did a bit of everything, shutting out ADM from the mound and posting the best hitting line of his Tiger team. Johnson struck out nine batters to move to 5-0 on the year, and he also led Gilbert’s offensive charge with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate.
For as good as Johnson was, however, offense was tough to find for both teams.
Gilbert finished with eight hits, with Johnson leading the way. Nick Chasey also recorded a multi-hit performance, finishing 2-for-4.
ADM finished with six hits, the most by any losing team in Tuesday’s slate. Chase Anderson, ADM’s leadoff hitter, posted a team-best two hits.
After a stalemate in the first three innings, Gilbert came alive in the fourth, scoring three runs.
The first came off an error. With the bases loaded, Spencer Clatt reached first on a fielder’s choice, and a throwing error plated Eli Eldred. Joe Drzycimski followed up with a fly-out that brought in Owen Blumhagen, and then Trey Hansen singled up the middle to bring home Nolan Weber.
Aside from that inning, both offenses had a hard time stringing much together. Johnson got the win, but it was his opposing starting pitcher who also contributed to the stout defensive contest.
Despite being on the mound during Gilbert’s three-run fourth, ADM starting pitcher Zach Fuller kept things under control in his first three scoreless innings. Fuller pitched 4.1 innings, allowing just six hits and striking out six.
Gilbert will face Dallas Center-Grimes on July 31. The Mustangs advanced after a 1-0 win over Benton on Tuesday.
