AT PRINCIPAL PARK: THE BEST OF THE BEST AT STATE

There has been a lot of great baseball during the first 14 years of the Iowa high school state baseball tournament at Principal Park. Here is a look at facts, stats and notes from 2005 to 2018.

In the first 14 years of the state baseball tournament at Principal Park in Des Moines, 174 schools have played in the tournament, more than 50 percent of the teams that compete in the sport. Included in the 174 are 17 teams that have qualified in two different classes. Ninety-four of the 174 have qualified in multiple years.

The qualifying breakdown, by class:
4A – 34 of 48 ... 71 percent
3A – 40 of 64 ... 63 percent
2A – 45 of 96 ... 47 percent
1A – 55 of 137 ... 40 percent

Thirty-six different schools have won a state championship at Principal Park.

Of the 56 titles won at Principal Park, 36 have been won by public schools and 20 by private schools (seven in 1A).

The paid attendance through the first 14 years is 424,553 with the largest attended tournament coming in 2013 – 35,095. Seven of the 14 tournaments have attracted 30,000 or more paid admissions.

Championship Saturday has generated 96,207 paid fans, with the largest being in 2005 – 9,181. Seven of the 14 crowds on Championship Saturday have topped 6,998 paid.
