AT PRINCIPAL PARK: THE BEST OF THE BEST AT STATE

There’s been nothing unlucky about the first 13 years of the Iowa high school state baseball tournament at Principal Park — just a lot of great baseball. Here is a look at facts, stats and notes from 2005 to 2017, compiled by Bud Legg of the Iowa High School Athletic Association.

In the first 13 years of the state baseball tournament at Principal Park in Des Moines, 174 schools have played in the tournament, more than 50 percent of the teams that compete in the sport. Included in the 174 are eight teams that have qualified in two different classes. Ninety-two of the 174 have qualified in multiple years.

The qualifying breakdown, by class:
4A – 31 of 48 ... 65 percent
3A – 43 of 64 ... 67 percent
2A – 48 of 96 ... 50 percent
1A – 58 of 137 ... 42 percent

Thirty-six different schools have won a state championship at Principal Park.

The qualifying and championship breakdown between public and private schools: 155 public, 19 private. Of the 42 titles won at Principal Park, 25 have been won by public schools and 17 by private schools.

The paid attendance through the first 13 years is 397,020 with the largest attended tournament coming in 2013 – 35,095. Seven of the 13 tournaments have attracted 30,000 or more paid admissions.

Championship Saturday has generated 90,292 paid fans, with the largest being in 2005 – 9,181. Seven of the 13 crowds on Championship Saturday have topped 6,998 paid.
