RATED & ADVANCING: Five of the Top 10 Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association rated teams have come through the qualifying rounds, led by top-rated Harlan and second-ranked Assumption. Saydel, ranked fourth, Marion, rated fifth and number 8 Bishop Heelan Catholic are also in.
RETURNEES FROM 2016: Just three teams from the 2016 Tournament return led by defending champion Harlan. Wahlert Catholic and Bishop Heelan Catholic also return.
CHAMPIONSHIP PEDIGREE: The tourney field sports three teams who have combined for 14 previous championships. Assumption has won nine summer titles and can become the first team ever to win 10 if they can run the table. Harlan has won three gold trophies and Bishop Heelan has a pair with the last coming in 2005.
HIGH WIN COACHES: Marion’s Steve Fish has a career record of 660-365 to lead the field. Harlan’s Steve Daegas is close behind with a 643-208 record. Assumption’s Billy Argo enters the tournament with a 503-191 mark. Saydel’s JR Gebhart has a 14-year career record of 312-167, while Bondurant-Farrar’s Brad Hamilton has a 23-year record of 327-298. Bishop Heelan’s Andy Osborne has a 20-year career slate of 315-233.
CURRENT WIN STREAKS: Harlan brings a 13-game win streak to the tournament and has won 16 of its last 17 games. Bishop Heelan has strung together victories in the last 8 games and has won 13 of its last 14 contests
STATE COACHING DEBUT: Oskaloosa’s Clint Gingerich is making his first ever appearance on the state tournament field of dreams. He is in his fourth season.
HIATUSES: Oskaloosa is in the Final Eight for just the second time and the first since 1998. Bondurant-Farrar is making its third state meet trip and first since 2007, and Saydel is back for the fourth time but the first since back-to-back appearances in 2006 and 2007.
FLASHY RECORDS: Four of the teams come in with 30 or more wins and collective the special eight have a win-loss record of 238-79 for a 75.87 win percentage
THE TOURNAMENT: This is the 72nd season for the State Summer Baseball, which has been in four classes since 1981. It is also the 90th State Tournament series that started in the Spring of 1928. This is the 13th year for the four-class tournament at Principal Park. In the previous 12 years at Principal Park nearly 370,000 fans have supported their teams. Attendance since 1997 is over 510,000 going into this year’s games.
ENROLLMENTS: The IHSAA uses the official state certified BEDS enrollment figures for grades 9 thru 11 for the 2015-16 school year for placement of a school in a class. Oskaloosa is the largest school in the field with an enrollment of 542 students, while Saydel is the smallest with 311.
