RATED & REMAINING: Five of the final Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association Top 10 are in the tourney field, including teams rated 1-4 respectively – North Linn, Newman Catholic, Martensdale-St. Marys and Akron-Westfield. No. 6 Lisbon is also qualified.

FIRST-TIME QUALIFIERS: CAM and Akron-Westfield have qualified for the Elite Meet for the first time. North Linn is a second-time qualifier.

RETURNING FROM 2016: Defending champion Remsen St. Mary’s and Newman Catholic are the only two teams in this year’s field that also qualified last year.

FIRST-TIME STATE COACHES: There are four coaches who will be making their State Tournament debut. Gordy Johnson of Akron-Westfield; Dan Daugherty of CAM; Travis Bennett of Lisbon; and Joe Bahnsen from Hudson. Alex Bohl of Newman Catholic has been a co-coach on their last two teams but makes the tourney as the fifth coach to guide the Knights in the Elite Meet.

PAST TITLE HOLDERS: Four teams in this year’s field have a combined total of 14 State Titles. Newman Catholic has won five crowns, while Remsen St. Mary’s and Martensdale-St. Marys each have four and Lisbon one. In addition, St. Mary’s has three Fall State Tournament championships.

CONSECUTIVE TOURNEY CHAIN: Newman Catholic joins the field for the 10th straight year, which is an all-class best. The Knights are in their 21st pilgrimage to the championships, also an all-time, all-class best. Martensdale-St. Marys is in the tourney for the 14th time, while Remsen St. Mary’s is back for their tenth

BEST WIN STREAKS: North Linn enters the tournament with a 16-game win streak, while Remsen St. Mary’s has won it last 13. Newman Catholic seeks to extend it 9-game win chain.

PLAYING UP: Several of the 1A field played “up” in class during the regular season, led by Hudson who had 21 games against teams with larger classifications. Martensdale-St. Marys had 17 games against non-1A teams, while Newman Catholic played up 13 times; and Akron-Westfield and Remsen St. Mary’s stepped out of the 1A ranks 11 times each.

YOUTH CORPS: Six of the teams have three or fewer seniors among their top 10 players. Lisbon does not start a senior and has only one listed on its roster. North Linn and CAM each have one senior and Newman Catholic has two among its top 10. Hudson and Martensdale-St. Marys list three seniors among its top 10.

LONG WAIT: Other than Akron-Westfield and CAM, Hudson is back in the tourney for the first time since 2002. Cumberland-Massena, part of the CAM district was second in 1993 under now assistant coach Steve Pelzer.

COMBINED WIN PERCENTAGE: With six teams in the field with over 25 wins, the eight teams have a combined 84.0-win percentage with a 241-46 record.

LEADING WIN COACHES IN THE TOURNEY: Co-coaches at Remsen St. Mary’s are among the winningest coaches in this year 1A field. Jim Wesselmann has a career mark of 605-249 over a 34-year period and Dean Harpeneau has a 14-year mark of 314-151. North Linn’s Travis Griffith has a 14-year career record of 293-186 with an 11-year record of 237-161 with the Lynx. He coached three seasons at Highland. Martensdale-St. Marys Jon Fitzpatrick, in his fifth season with the Blue Devils, has a seven-year mark of 225-58 which includes two years at Van Meter.

ENROLLMENTS: To determine the classification of each school, the IHSAA uses the official state certified BEDS enrollment figures for grades 9 thru 11 for the 2015-16 school year. The smallest Class 1A qualifier is Remsen St. Mary’s (63) while the largest qualifier is North Linn (153).

THE TOURNAMENT: This is the 72nd season for the State Summer Baseball, which has been in four classes since 1981. It is also the 90th State Tournament series that started in the Spring of 1928. This is the 13th year for the four-class tournament at Principal Park. In the previous 12 years at Principal Park nearly 370,000 fans have supported their teams. Attendance since 1997 is over 510,000 going into this year’s games.
