Eighth-seeded Kingsley-Pierson rallied from a 2-0 deficit and stunned top-seeded and top-ranked Martensdale-St.Marys 3-2 in eight innings in the Class 1A opener of the 2020 state tournament on a hot, steamy, sweaty Friday afternoon at Principal Park.
The Panthers advance to the semifinals at 16-2. MSTM ends at 26-2.
MSTM scored twice in the second on one hit and four errors. Cole Cassidy had an RBI single for the Blue Devils.
That 2-0 lead held up until the sixth inning when K-P scored twice on three hits and an error. After two outs, an error, singles by Damon Bowman, Emerson Pratt and Malakie Christophersen pushed across two runs.
The Blue Devils had chances in the sixth and seventh, but failed to score. K-P left two men on base in the seventh. The Panthers had 13 runners left on base for the game.
K-P scored in the top of the eighth on a walk, a single by Malakie Christophersen, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Matt Christophersen.
