Fifth-seeded Don Bosco broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the top of the fifth inning to defeat fourth-seeded South Winneshiek 3-1 in a Class 1A first-round game at Principal Park. The teams’ pitchers combined for 20 strikeouts.
Cael Frost led off the game for the Dons with a towering home run over the manual scoreboard in right field — his ninth homer of the season.
The Warriors tied the game in the bottom of the first on three hits — by Noah Tieskoetter, Jaron Todd and Seth Greve. South Winn could have scored more, but had a runner thrown out at the plate trying to score, and another thrown out trying to steal third.
Don Bosco scored two runs in the top of the fifth on two hits and an error. Lewis Havel had a two-run double in the inning as the Dons also took advantage of an intentional walk and a stolen base.
Havel fanned 11 — including striking out the side in the seventh — for the Dons (18-1).
South Winn starter Ethan Luzum struck out eight in six innings. Jaron notched the other strikeout for the Warriors (25-2) who were making their second straight state tournament appearance.
