KINGSLEY-PIERSON 3, MARTENSDALE-ST.MARYS 2
Eighth-seeded Kingsley-Pierson rallied from a 2-0 deficit and stunned top-seeded and top-ranked Martensdale-St.Marys in eight innings in the Class 1A opener of the 2020 state tournament on a hot, steamy, sweaty afternoon at Principal Park.
MSTM scored twice in the second on one hit and four errors. That 2-0 lead held up until the sixth inning when K-P scored twice on three hits and an error. K-P scored in the top of the eighth on a walk, a single by Malakie Christophersen, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Matt Christophersen.
DON BOSCO 3, SOUTH WINNESHIEK 1
Fifth-seeded Don Bosco broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the top of the fifth inning to defeat fourth-seeded South Winneshiek. The teams’ pitchers combined for 20 strikeouts.
Cael Frost led off the game for the Dons with a towering home run over the manual scoreboard in right field — his ninth homer of the season.
NEWMAN CATHOLIC 6, ST.ALBERT 5
Down 5-2 after five innings, three-time defending state champion Newman Catholic rallied to take the lead and then held off late-inning threats by Council Bluffs St. Albert.
Freshman Max Burt started the game — batting second for the Knights — with a towering home run to left field. He added a bases-loaded RBI double in the sixth inning and then finished the game on the mound, pitching the final two innings to pick up the win.
REMSEN ST.MARY’S 11, BURLINGTON NOTRE DAME 1
DON BOSCO 9, KINGSLEY-PIERSON 1
Undefeated Remsen St. Mary’s coasted to a win in five innings over Burlington Notre Dame in a game that was closer than the final score indicates.
The second-seeded Hawks join the 5, 6 and 8 seeds in the semifinals. The first three 1A quarterfinal games were decided by a total of four runs.
Don Bosco erupted for four runs in the first two innings, and its defense held strong for the remainder of the semifinal-round contest against Kingsley-Pierson.
Dons pitcher Lewis Havel allowed four hits and struck out seven in the winning effort. Offensively, teammates Cael Frost and Ryan Naughton each totaled two hits. Frost added two RBIs.
DON BOSCO 3, NEWMAN CATHOLIC 2
NEWMAN CATHOLIC 2, REMSEN ST.MARY’S 0
It took nine innings, but Newman Catholic defeated previously undefeated Remsen St. Mary’s in the semifinals.
The Knights scored in the ninth as Nash Holmgaard drilled an RBI single into center field. A wild pitch pushed across the second run.
Newman finished off St. Mary’s in the bottom of the inning with three strikeouts from reliever Doug Taylor.
The low-scoring game came at the hands of an excellent pitchers’ duel. Newman’s Sam Kratz gave up four hits, struck out 12 and shut out the Hawks in his 7.1 innings on the mound. St. Mary’s Blaine Harpenau had an even better outing, tossing 15 strikeouts and allowing just three hits in his 7.1 innings.
Don Bosco took down Newman Catholic in the Class 1A title game. The Dons denied the Knights’ quest for a four-peat with an offensive boom in the bottom of the sixth.
Don Bosco’s Charlie Hogan entered the contest with just three hits all season, one of which coming earlier in the state tournament. But the junior connected on a pair of big-time hits, including the go-ahead RBI double in the bottom of the sixth. Hogan finished a perfect 2-for-2 from the plate.
The state qualifiers have a combined 154-13 record — a .922 winning percentage
Six of the eight teams have won state championships
Five of the eight teams are private schools
Newman Catholic has qualified for 15 of the 16 state tournaments held at Principal Park, missing only 2007. This year’s 6-seed is the Knights’ lowest in that time. They have been the top seed the previous seven tournaments and 11 times in that span, with three 2-seeds.
