VAN METER 1, TREYNOR 0
Pitching was the name of the game, as top-ranked and top-seeded Van Meter took down eighth-seeded Treynor in eight innings to advance to the 2A semifinals.
Van Meter pitchers totaled 17 strikeouts in a combined no-hitter. Treynor pitchers fanned six and allowed just two hits.
The deciding — and only — run came in the bottom of the eighth inning when Van Meter sophomore Jack Pettit hit a ball to right field. The ball landed just inside the foul line, sending senior Bryce Cole home with the game-winning run. Cole reached on an error with one out and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.
Van Meter’s Anthony Potthoff tossed a no-hitter before leaving the game due to reaching his pitch count. He struck out 13 batters in his 6.2 innings on the mound while only walking one. Zach
Pleggenkuhle finished the game, striking out four and also no-hitting Treynor in his 1.1 innings.
WEST LYON 13, MID-PRAIRIE 3
West Lyon — the farthest school in the state from Principal Park at 263 miles — made of the most of its long trip, and its first state tournament trip since 1996.
The Wildcats strung together nine runs in the second and third innings and defeated Mid-Prairie in six innings.
NORTH LINN 2, DURANT 1
North Linn rattled off a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh and won on a walk-off RBI single by senior Parker Brechen
North Linn’s Swiss Army knife Austin Hilmer did a bit of everything, but he excelled on the mound. The senior pitched all seven innings, allowing just two hits while striking out six. After Durant scored in the top of the first, Hilmer held the Wildcats scoreless.
On the flip side, Durant arm Nate Dierickx put together an excellent start as well. He pitched 6.2 innings, allowing just two runs on five hits and seven strikeouts. Dierickx had the Lynx (the best batting team in 2A) at bay until the final inning.
DES MOINES CHRISTIAN 2, DIKE-NEW HARTFORD 1
It took 10 innings, but six-seed Des Moines Christian edged three-seed Dike-New Hartford in a game that ended at 11:50 Monday night.
The game-winning run came in the top of the 10th inning when Colby Shelton singled to left center field. The ball bounced just outside the Dike-New Hartford outfielder’s glove, providing base runner Ben Leusink the time to cross home.
DMC pitcher Kole Bradley threw 11 strikeouts and gave up just one hit in his six innings on the mound. Trey Castile entered once Bradley left, and he shut out Dike-New Hartford in his four innings. Castile struck out four, including two in the bottom of the 10th.
Dike-New Hartford’s defense came from the arm of pitcher Reece Beuter. He tossed 110 pitches in 7.2 innings, striking out 12 and allowing just three hits.
VAN METER 3, WEST LYON 1
Van Meter junior Zach Pleggenkuhle tossed 11 strikeouts and allowed just two hits in his complete game from the mound.
Offensively, the Bulldogs saw a 2-for-3 effort from Anthony Potthoff. Teammate Jacob Blomgren finished with a team-best two RBIs.
DES MOINES CHRISTIAN 4, NORTH LINN 2
Des Moines Christian upset North Linn in eight innings.
North Linn scored in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. The Lions offense caught fire in the top of the eighth. Adam Witty delivered the go-ahead run in the top of the inning. With runners on first and second, he connected on an RBI double, which landed just inside the left-field line. Teammate Trey Castile popped out to right field soon after, scoring Kole Bradley for the Lions’ fourth run of the game.
Meanwhile, Lions pitcher Trey Castile couldn’t miss early on. The senior had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning. Castile tossed nine strikeouts and gave up just two hits in his complete eight innings.
VAN METER 6, DES MOINES CHRISTIAN 0
Van Meter defeated Des Moines Christian for its second straight 2A state title.
Anthony Potthoff pitched a complete-game shutout. He struck out eight and walked just two. He allowed four hits.
Both teams are members of the West Central Conference. Van Meter won the regular-season meeting 1-0.
