Western Dubuque came out swinging, as the Bobcats struck first in the top frame and capitalized on four hit batters and three errors to edge North Scott, 7-4, Wednesday at Principal Park.
The Bobcats continued to build a steady lead throughout, as they got to North Scott’s Kyle Denison early, tagging the righty for one run in the first and four in the second.
Denison would end his day going three innings, with five earned runs on eight hits before Grayson Drezek stifled the Bobcats over four innings of one-hit ball.
Bobcat Calvin Harris (8-1) kept the North Scott offense uncomfortable through his seven frames, allowing just one earned run on nine hits, with four walks and seven strikeouts.
Designated hitter Trevor Lynch and Tony Barreca each notched multi-hit games off the righty, with Lynch going a perfect 4-for-4 on the night.
A dropped third strike in the bottom of the fourth led to a three-run resurgence by North Scott, as centerfielder Chase Mosley collected two RBIs on a single. But the effort fell just short, as Western Dubuque added an additional run in the seventh.
Across the lines, designated hitter Damon Jaeger led the Bobcats offense, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI. Zach Bierman drove in two of the five RBI, as six of the top seven batters in the lineup collected at least one hit off North Scott.
In the end, a base running blunder by North Scott stretching a double into a triple led to a missed opportunity in the bottom of the seventh, as back-to-back singles were unable to rally the Lancer offense.
Western Dubuque (34-9) will face the winner of Wednesday night’s Game 2 between Marshalltown and Urbandale, Friday evening in the 4A semifinals.
North Scott ends at 28-11.
