Second-seeded Urbandale advanced to the 4A state championship behind some big middle innings and defeated Western Dubuque 7-3 in the semifinals Friday night at Principal Park.

Western Dubuque was threating in the top of the first inning and had the bases loaded until Urbandale starting pitcher Brady Roberts got out of the jam with a 6-4-3 double play to keep the game at 0-0.

The Bobcats were the first to strike putting up three runs thanks to a Ryan Gasper single, a wild pitch and an error which gave them a 3-0 lead in the second inning.

The Urbandale bats woke up in the third with the team tacking on a run from a Carl Troncin single which made the game 3-1. The J-Hawks added three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a sac fly from Ty Cowley, an errant throw and a double from Troncin and gained a 4-3 lead.

The J-Hawks added three more runs in the middle innings to secure the 7-3 win. Ty Langenberg earned the win pitching in 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Troncin had a great day going 3-for-3 with 4 RBIs and recorded the final three outs of the game on the mound.

Urbandale will play for the 4A state championship, while Western Dubuque’s season will end at 34-10.
