Top-seeded Iowa City Regina advanced to the 2A state championship behind a three-run second inning and the pitching of Jayden Kies to beat Van Meter 4-3 Thursday night in the semifinals at Principal Park.
Anthony Potthoff broke the scoring in the first with a sac fly to right that scored J.J. Durflinger to give Van Meter an early 1-0 lead.
Regina answered the call in the bottom of the second inning picking up three runs to make the game 3-1. Kies reached on an error which scored Evan Suchomel to give the Regals their first run. Ryne Schooley and Ryan Schott brought in runs two and three for Regina which them put them up 3-1.
Van Meter scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning, but couldn’t complete the comeback effort. Both pitchers, Kies and Brett Berg, went the distance for their schools but it was Kies who earned the win.
Regina (29-7) will play Centerville in the title game, while Van Meter’s season will end at 30-9.
