Draeden Spang smashed a pinch-hit bases clearing triple in the fifth inning to help Cedar Rapids Washington upset top-ranked and top-seeded Johnston 7-5 in the Class 4A quarterfinals Wednesday afternoon. It was the fifth time the 8 seed has upset the 1 seed in state tournament play at Principal Park.
Rimmy Nemickas led off the game being hit by a pitch and later scored to give Cedar Rapids Washington an early 1-0 lead.
Johnston matched the early run on a Drew Beazley single to make the game 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning.
Noah Janssen gave the Dragons a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third scoring Andrew Nord and Cade Moss.
As the game continued, Johnston was able to gain a 4-3 lead until Cedar Rapids Washington exploded for a four-run fifth inning to take the 7-4 lead.
Johnston picked up a run in the fifth, but that wasn’t enough as Nemickas pitched two scoreless innings in a high pressure relief situation and earned the win.
Cedar Rapids Washington (26-7) will advance to battle Valley on Friday while the defending state champion Dragons’ season will end with a 34-6 record.
