In a game where runs were hard to come by, Assumption eeked out a 2-1 walk-off win over Bishop Heelan Catholic in the Class 3A semifinals Friday afternoon at Principal Park, advancing to the state championship game for the 14th time.
Both teams scored a run in the third inning, as Heelan’s Brant Hogue and Tom Schiltz, and Assumption’s Nick Gottilla held opposing offenses in check.
The Knights scored with two outs in the bottom of the seventh — on a Ryan Wohler walk and Brandon Schlichting single, to later capitalize on an error and wild pitch to win 2-1.
Schlichting and Donovan Juarez both collected multi-hit games, each going 2-for-3, with Juarez roping the lone RBI on day for Assumption with a triple in the third.
Gottilla went the distance, as he held the Crusaders to just one earned run on one hit with five walks and 11 strikeouts to notch the victory.
Assumption (33-10) will face Harlan in the 3A championship, with a chance to add to its 10 state titles, 5 p.m. Saturday at Principal Park. Heelan ends at 32-11.
