CLASS 1A NEWS AND NOTES.

Seven of the top 10 teams, including the top four in the final Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association rankings, survived the district and substate to advance to the 2018 state tournament in Class 1A. The seven are top-rated Newman Catholic, second-ranked Lisbon, third-ranked North Linn and fourth-ranked Remsen St. Mary’s. Sixth-ranked Martensdale-St. Marys, seventh-ranked Council Bluffs St. Albert and ninth-ranked Tri-Center complete the ranked teams. Read more for news and notes about the 1A qualifiers.

The state baseball tournament moved to Des Moines in 2005, and since then, lots of talented baseball players have showcased their skills at Principal Park. The list includes players who went on to play in college, in the minor leagues and in the major leagues. And players who went on to work for the host Iowa Cubs. STATE TOURNAMENT FANS: KEEP THAT FOUL BALL - small image

Fans can keep foul balls hit into the stands during state tournament games. The Iowa Association of Independent Colleges and Universities is the official foul ball sponsor of the tournament. Their support of high school baseball makes it possible for fans to keep a great souvenir of the state tournament. There are an average of 750 baseballs used each year during the state tournament. And most of them go home with fans.

Top-seeded Knoxville used a four-run fourth inning to erase a two-run deficit and end Independence’s upset bid, outlasting the eighth-seeded Mustangs, 5-3, in the first class 3A quarterfinal Tuesday afternoon at Principal Park. Read More

CHARLES CITY TOPS STORM LAKE, 4-3, IN 10 INNINGS.

Charles City put up three runs in the top of the 10th and held their lead into the bottom of the frame as the Comets cemented their place in the semifinals with a 4-3 win over Storm Lake in the second class 3A quarterfinal Tuesday afternoon at Principal Park. Read More

15 HITS POWER GLENWOOD PAST ALGONA, 11-2.

The eighth-ranked Glenwood Rams powered past the Algona Bulldogs 11-2 Tuesday night in the final Class 3A first-round game at Principal Park. The Rams collected 15 hits behind the terrific starting pitching of Taylor Kaufman, who struck out 10 batters in six innings in the effort. Read More

LECHTENBERG LEADS CENTRAL PAST CARLISLE, 7-3.

The Central Clinton Sabers scored five runs on only two hits in the top of the fourth inning to break the game open and upset the Carlisle Wildcats, 7-3. Wildcats’ starting pitcher Ryan Lechtenberg hurled a complete game and was virtually in control the whole game for the Sabers. It was the third of four Class 3A state quarterfinal games at Principal Park on Tuesday. Five consecutive men reached base for the Sabers, all of whom came across to score in the inning. Read More

TWO SEVEN-RUN INNINGS POWER COLUMBUS PAST ST. EDMOND, 16-6.

Waterloo Columbus sent 11 men to the plate on two occasions in a pair of seven-run innings to surge past Fort Dodge St. Edmond, 16-6, in six innings in a Class 2A first-round game Monday afternoon at Principal Park. The Sailors were in a 5-0 hole after two innings, but rallied to put up a seven-spot in the third inning and never looked back. Read More

SHULISTA TOSSES GEM, LEADS SOLON PAST I-35, 4-0.

Solon starting pitcher Brandon Shulista hurled a complete-game shutout en route to a 4-0 win over Interstate 35 in a Class 2A first-round game Monday afternoon at Principal Park. Shulista gave up only two hits, no walks, hit a batter and struck out nine batters. Read More

PRESTON UPSETS #3 DON BOSCO, 5-2.

Preston sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning to break open the game and defeat third-ranked Don Bosco 5-2 in a Class 1A first-round state tournament game Saturday night at Principal Park. The Trojans scored three runs in the inning and were aided by four walks and a run-scoring balk. Read More

MARTENSDALE-ST. MARYS RIDES 12-RUN FIRST TO VICTORY, 16-0.

Top-ranked Martensdale-St. Marys rode a 12-run first inning to defeat the Ar-We-Va Rockets, 16-0 in five innings Saturday night to close out the Class 1A first round at Principal Park. The Blue Devils sent 16 men to the plate in the first inning and went on to push their season record to a perfect 41-0. Read More

ST. MARY’S HOLDS OFF SE WARREN, 7-5.

Remsen St. Mary’s held off a pair of rallies by Southeast Warren and won 7-5 Saturday afternoon in the completion of the first Class 1A quarterfinal at Principal Park. The game was completed after being suspended Friday night due to weather. Read More

Welcome to the “new” official site of the Iowa high school state baseball tournament. As the Iowa Cubs and Principal Park prepare to host the state tournament for the fourth summer, we decided to give the site a facelift and add some new features. Most of those new features – like video highlights and live play-by-play scoring – will be noticed most during the week of the state tournament. During the regular season, we post the weekly state rankings here. And we’ll have the scores from every district and substate game leading to the state tournament. We hope you like the new look. WE'RE READY FOR BASEBALL.

The Iowa Cubs and Principal Park are excited to be the hosts for the state tournament through – at least – the 2013 season. But we’re a bit more excited this season. It was a cold and wet April and May at Principal Park. And like many teams across the state, we experienced some flooding. The Iowa Cubs even played a game before zero fans. We look forward to hosting fans from all across Iowa at the state tournament. We hope your favorite team makes it here.
